General Information

I designed this sign for my fellow SWAT operators. This is made from Solid Red Oak. I utilized the ribbon from the "Pro Design Library" to add the name ribbon on top and bottom. I used the "Shapes Tool" to add the circle and other background. The Image of the SWAT Emblem was purchased off Etsy.

1. Prepare Wood

Use Red Oak board cut to size: 22" x 29.5"x.75" (Glue up several pieces if necessary)

Sand to 220 Grit Raise the grain (spray with thin coat of water) Sand again to 220 Grit

Add Oramask Vinyl to Front Side

Estimated time: 10 minutes

2. Carve "2 Stage Carve"

Rough Pass - 1/8" End Mill Feed Rate: 46.8 in/min Plunge Rate: 9 in/min Depth Per Pass: 0.0625 in

Detail Bit - 60 Degree V-Bit Feed Rate: 52 in/min Plunge Rate: 9 in/min Depth Per Pass: 0.0625 in

Estimated time: 480 minutes

3. Carve outer shape

Cut out using: 1/8" End Mill Feed Rate: 46.8 in/min Plunge Rate: 9 in/min Depth Per Pass: 0.0625 in

Estimated time: 26 minutes

4. Key Holes

Flip piece and add Key Holes in Back

Use Key Hole Bit: 3/8" Diameter

Estimated time: 10 minutes

5. Clean Up

Clean up using sand paper (220 Grit) and small carving tools

Be sure to tape around edge if you don't want it painted.

Estimated time: 30 minutes

6. Pre-Seal

3 coats on front prior to painting:

I use the following: Minwax - Waterbased - Polycrylic - Clear Satin (30 minutes between coats)

Estimated time: 15 minutes

7. Paint

1 - 2 coats of spray paint:

I use the following: Rust Oleum - 2x Ultra Cover - Paint & Primer - Satin Canyon Black

Estimated time: 15 minutes

8. Round over edge

Route outer edge with 1/4" round over bit

Estimated time: 10 minutes

9. Peel off Oramask

Peal off Oramask (using small Exacto knife if needed.)

Estimated time: 15 minutes

10. Finish Sanding

Sand exposed wood front and back

Using 220 grit

Estimated time: 20 minutes

11. Clean before sealing

Blow off dust

Wipe down with damp micro-fiber rag

Estimated time: 10 minutes

12. Seal with Polycrylic

3 coats front and back

I use the following: Minwax - Waterbased - Polycrylic - Clear Satin (30 minutes between coats)

Estimated time: 15 minutes

13. FINISHED!

Let dry and you are done!
