The base makes the entire setup a lot more sturdy while the top improves that and help with sealing for even better airflow.

Filters last somewhere around 6 months with continuous use.
One nice trick once you slot the filters in the base is to use some masking tape to align them to each other on top and to seal any cracks between them (see the pictures).

That's a good idea. I have too many cats, and have cat hair and dust all over my house. That looks like it takes out a lot of impurities from the air.

Oh, it's very effective. It's a riff on the more common Corsi-Rosenthal box which is made with 20'x20' filters and one of those cheap Lasko box fans from Home Depot. This is quite a bit smaller in size though, it saves a lot of space at the cost of reduced filtration surface.
