I used .5" MDF but you could use pretty much everything.

I've done this twice now. Once the way it is published with 60 degree vbit on the lettering and a 1/8" bit for the main cuts. And a second way where I just did one run-through and a 1/8" bit for for everything.

The second is less set up work but the first is easier to paint in my opinion.
