General Information

A tool bit holder for common Carvey bits. I always felt bad tossing the plastic black plastic caps they came with, so I found a way to reuse them. Use some No. 5 x 1/2 long screws and secure the black caps from the back. The hole dia required is conveniently the same size as the bit shank diameter.

Material and Set Up

  • Workpiece should be 4" x 8" x 1/4". I used a scrap of purpleheart.
  • The 1/16 in downcut bit worked fine for everything, but I did dial down the speed a bit given how hard the material is. Feed Rate: 30 in / min, Plunge Rate: 10 in / min, Depth per Pass: 0.03 in. I used the standard offset fill method,.

Assemble

  • Use some No. 5 x 1/2 lg wood/sheet metal screws to attach the black caps from behind. Note that the black caps have a small white dowel inside each one that acts as a spacer. Pluck those out as desired (the screw tends to just push them up too high and provides less room for the bit shank).
  • I just used some upholstery tacks as feet (one in each corner) with a bit of wood glue. The bits not held by the black caps do touch the surface beneath the holder (which is fine for my purposes), but taller feet would eliminate that.

  • You can use the black caps or just use the same screw hole for the bit shanks.
