Start from a blank workpiece

Make your own wooden dish

Start with a blank workpiece and set the stock thickness to 1¼ inches. Add a 6-inch outer circle and a 5-inch inner circle to leave a half-inch rim. Set the inner pocket to ¾ inch deep, leaving a half-inch bottom. The real Easel recording shows the thicker stock and deeper flat-bottomed pocket in the native 3D preview. The outside outline reaches the stock thickness; choose tabs, workholding and cut settings before carving. This is a design demonstration, not a complete cutting setup.

A real Easel guest blank workpiece is set to 1¼-inch stock, then gains a six-inch outside outline and a five-inch pocket cut ¾ inch deep, leaving a half-inch bottom in the native 3D preview.

Carve small compartments or stack rings into a bowl

Pocketed dishes start with a thicker blank. Layered bowls build height from flat parts. These makers show both approaches, with shared designs you can adapt.

Twist each ring to support the one above

Ragland places each scalloped ring slightly out of line with the ring below it. The outer bumps of the lower ring support the inner bumps above. Follow the numbered order in his assembly image, then rotate the layers before gluing so the open sides keep their support.

Leave enough room around raised letters

Stych spaced and resized the letters in her heart dishes so a quarter-inch bit could clear the pocket around them. For your own message, check the gaps between letters as well as the letter shapes. Fine lettering may need a smaller detail bit after the larger bit clears the pocket.

Clean squeeze-out before painting a layered bowl

Downes wipes away excess glue with a damp cloth while assembling the rabbit dish. He clamps or weights the three layers before painting. Cleaning the joints at glue-up leaves less dried glue to remove around the small recess and the outside edges.
