Choose the job before the style
Wedding pieces do different jobs. A welcome sign should be readable from across the room, a keepsake can focus on names and a date, and table numbers need to stand securely without crowding the place settings.
Choose the setting first, then match the project to it. That choice sets the size, material, lettering style, bit, mounting method, and finish. The examples below cover a square personalized sign, a long hardwood date sign, and freestanding table numbers.

Before you carve
A welcome sign has to read across a room, while a table marker needs to stay clear of plates, flowers, and sight lines. Mock up the finished size where it will be used before choosing the stock.
V-carved lettering can hold fine strokes, but the angle and depth change how wide each cut becomes. Check the thinnest letter and border detail, then carve a scrap sample before using the final board.
Sheet goods rarely match their labeled thickness exactly. For standing numbers, measure the MDF or plywood with calipers and adjust the base slot in the Easel project before cutting a full set.
The sign makers sealed the surface before adding paint, then sanded the face to remove the excess. Test the sealer, paint, stain, sanding sequence, and clear coat together on scrap so the lettering stays crisp and the wood keeps the color you want.
