Start from a blank workpiece

Design your own soap dish

Start with a blank workpiece in Easel, draw a rounded dish outline and repeat five shallow grooves. The 3D preview shows the design in hard maple.

Recorded in the Easel editor, playing at 4× real speed.

Lift out a wooden insert or carve grooves into the dish

Choose the surface and construction you like. The wooden design has two separate pieces; the Corian and HDPE designs shape both faces of a single blank.

Locate both faces from the same reference

Steve Gale uses markers or a jig to put the Corian blank back in exactly the same position after flipping it. He sets the work origin at the center, carves the underside first, then turns the blank over for the top. Keep the locating reference fixed for both faces.

Find the tray beneath the patterned insert

Thomas Quinn keeps the recessed base on a second workpiece tab. After looking at the open insert, select the next tab at the bottom of Easel to see the matching tray. The two pieces are carved separately, so choose the wood for each before starting.

Choose channel depth before carving the pattern

Beyond Design uses a 1/8-inch ball-nose cutter for the curved channels. The maker’s notes explain that a shallow cut can leave gaps between grooves, while a deeper cut makes taller, brittle edges. Check the channel depth against the cutter and material before running that stage.
