Seal the carved edges before adding the dark paint

Douglas Briney applied two coats of semigloss spray polyurethane and let them dry before spraying two coats of black paint. He then sanded the surface to leave the dark carving visible. Sealing the edges first helped keep the paint from bleeding beyond the design.
