Start from a blank workpiece

Draw two pencil pockets and a matching lid

On the blank Easel workpiece below, we lay out a case with separate recesses for two pencils. Draw an 8 by 2 inch base and set its outside cut to the half-inch stock thickness. Add two 7 by ½ inch rectangular pockets, set them to ¼ inch deep, then draw a separate 8 by 2 inch lid. The native 3D preview shows the pockets beside the flat lid. This unsaved layout demonstrates the basic drawing steps. Measure your pencils and draw your own custom version.

Leave the outside rounding until the layers are glued

Antonello rounds the corners with a plane after gluing his beech strips together. He then uses a belt sander and 240-grit paper during finishing. Shaping the assembled stack helps the layer edges meet as one case. His orange inserts are separate 2 mm foam pieces, so leave room for that lining when adapting the interior.

Ask a question

Mirror the inside layouts of a hinged pair

Vincent says to mirror the top and bottom when carving so they match. That matters when the two halves open around barrel hinges: the recesses need to face one another when the case closes. Keep the hinge and magnet locations paired as you adapt the pocket layout. The hinges and magnets are bought parts, not pieces carved from the lid.

Ask a question

Size the recesses for the pencils you carry

Leave space beside each pencil recess for the wood between pockets and the case walls. A hinged pair needs matching halves and room for its hinges and magnets.
