Design a plywood housing for an acrylic edge light

Make a two-layer plywood housing that holds an acrylic light panel above a recessed light strip. Birch plywood and acrylic appear in the makers’ builds below; the panel, light strip, cable and glue are separate from the wooden parts drawn here. First draw two 6 × 3-inch plates in half-inch plywood. In the lower plate, pocket a centered 3½ × ½-inch recess ¼ inch deep, then extend a ¼-inch-wide cable exit to the side, offset toward the front so it misses the panel’s end supports. In the upper plate, cut a centered 4⅛ × 0.14-inch slot all the way through. Glue the plates face to face with the slot above the recess. A separate 4-inch-wide, ⅛-inch-thick acrylic panel sits in the slot; the shorter recess leaves ¼ inch of support beneath each end, keeping its middle edge above the light strip. These example dimensions suit that panel: test its fit in scrap and adjust the recess around your chosen strip. The recording designs the wooden housing, not the electrical installation.

Build a desk light, a hanging shade or a wall lamp

Plywood ribs let light through the gaps; maple veneer softens it around a frame. An engraved acrylic panel lights from its edge, while a walnut silhouette carries a separate bulb. Choose the shaped parts for the light you want, then add the fitting, cable and mounting hardware. These files are not electrical plans.

Clean engraved acrylic with a repeat pass

Cristiana Felgueiras used a V-bit to engrave the acrylic in her Wall Lamp. When the first cuts left burrs, she made a second pass with exactly the same settings and no additional cutting load; that pass cleaned the grooves. Her bit had not accumulated acrylic shavings.
