Make a tray for your guitar picks

Keep picks within reach between songs. Try a compact guitar-shaped holder, a larger plywood tray or carved pickup details, then draw a simple pocket tray in Easel.

Explore the pick trays

Start from a blank workpiece

Draw a pick pocket with a quarter-inch rim

For a simple rectangular pick tray, draw a 4 × 3 inch outline and a 3 1/2 × 2 1/2 inch pocket inside it. The pocket sits 1/4 inch from each edge. Set its depth to 1/4 inch; this recording uses 0.759 inch walnut stock, leaving just over 1/2 inch underneath. The native 3D preview shows the recessed tray while the editor keeps the two shapes separate.

Recorded in the Easel editor, playing at 3× real speed.

The recording creates an unsaved guest workpiece. It shows a basic rectangular pick tray, not the guitar silhouettes in the shared projects or a finished carve.

Choose a compact body, a larger pair or engraved pickups

These trays differ in footprint, stock thickness and decoration. The original and its remakes show how one guitar-body idea can become several useful holders.

Leave a separate finishing pass for the bowl

Melvin Rooter Woodworks used the same 3/4 inch bowl cutter with a 40% stepover for roughing and 5% for finishing. The smaller finishing stepover gives the cutter more closely spaced passes across the pocket. That sequence is a useful starting point when the broad recessed surface matters more than getting the first pass smooth.

Ask a question

Reuse the pocket when changing the body shape

In John’s discussion, Anna Delia describes keeping the original pocket but replacing the outside outline with an acoustic-guitar shape. You can start with the recess you already like, then draw a different body around it. Leave enough wood between the new edge and the pocket instead of scaling both shapes together automatically.
